The Random Hubiak Recommends: The Foxires

Next week I’ll let you all know about the time I spent in the studio with my drummer, Paul Galiszewski, two weeks ago. Today, however, I simply wish to extend my appreciation to another great act that I feel deserves your attention.

The Foxfires are from upstate New York — I forget which of the Nyacks they’re from, but that’s where! Their music blends indie pop/rock with folk, surf rock, and shoe gaze (as well as, let’s be honest, some gorgeous chorus-y guitar work reminiscent of New Order) into what they describe as the “seagaze” sound. While they sometimes do delve into dark areas of the human psyche, their music always feels affirmative and enlightening.

I met these guys for the first time a year ago at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg PA, then again at the SS Cape May conference where I got to catch their fantastic live show. Dudes play a tight set! This year, we lathered, rinsed, and repeated, but this year I got to spend some quality down time with these guys over a few meals (but our performance schedules conflicted and I couldn’t watch them live). I can say that besides being wonderfully talented musicians, they are also very beautiful souls who care a great deal about preserving this world and lifting the spirits of its inhabitants. Give them a listen: You won’t be disappointed!
